A “Drivetrain malfunction. Drive moderately” error message appears on the iDrive screen of BMW drivers. If left unattended, this may be a major pain as it indicates an issue with the engine or gearbox. To find out more about a BMW drivetrain malfunction, read on!
What does a BMW’s drivetrain do?
The drivetrain transfers torque from the BMW’s engine to the wheels, much like in any other vehicle. Wheels, axles, differential, and CV joints are all components of a drivetrain system. Even a little problem with one of these parts can impact how well your automobile normally performs.
How does a BMW’s Drivetrain Malfunction Indication work?
The BMW’s Engine Control Module (ECM) may have identified a problem with the engine or gearbox if a Drivetrain Malfunction Indication is shown. It may also indicate a problem with the fuel or ignition systems.
In order to prevent damage to the car, the ECM will automatically limit the torque it produces when it detects this. To get your vehicle to the shop safely, you can put it into limp mode, also called safe driving mode.
Symptoms of BMW Drivetrain Failure
You shouldn’t freak out if your BMW shows a “Drivetrain Malfunction” error. On the contrary, it serves as a reminder to the driver to inspect the vehicle for any damaged components and fix them before they lead to more extensive damage. Some of the signs and symptoms that go along with it are:
- A signal that the engine is checking out.
- The iDrive screen will display any drivetrain errors.
- Inability to pass another car on a roadway due to a lack of power.
- Very rough idle.
- While the vehicle is idle or in Drive (D) mode, the engine will turn off.
- Your BMW won’t turn over.
- The exhaust began to produce heavier smoke.
- Uncomfortable tremors throughout the vehicle.
Verdict
While a BMW drivetrain malfunction isn’t always a catastrophic problem, it does mean you should get your vehicle checked out as soon as possible. Aware of the potential for more issues, though, you should drive carefully.
